One year ago, my Land Rover Discovery 4 HSE vanished in the early morning hours. This article is meant as a short reminiscence of an awesome car, which was more than a vehicle with four wheels to me.
Having a hard time
2013-2014 was quite a difficult time for me: I was struggling with health problems and I was drowning in work at the same time, trying to get my company forward. At least once a month I got my ass kicked from a direction I did not expected it to come from, be it the authorities, the tax office, social insurance, customers, friends, parents, etc. On top of that I had some marital problems too. To keep it short, it was a really hard phase of my life.
Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen?
My Audi A3 Sportback started to show his age, so I had to look for a substitute. Since my job required real offroad capabilities and lots of space, the range of possible candidates narrowed down fast.
Most people in the German speaking countries drive a car from a German manufacturer. German cars have the reputation of being reliable and made-to-last. But that is not necessarily true, at least my experience with my Audi was not flawless at all.
Another point is, that German cars are mostly boring. Take a look at a Volkswagen Tiguan, an Audi Q5 or a Skoda Yeti. This cars might be a rational choice and will serve their purpose for sure. But they are also charmless and unemotional, lacking character by trying to do everything right without attracting to much attention. That’s not what I search for in a car, since I will spent a lot of my lifetime sitting in it. My car may have some rough edges like I do.
And on the 8th day, god created Land Rover
In the end I visited a local Land Rover/Range Rover dealer and immediately fell in love with the British art of engineering. The angular and boxy design had still survived at Land Rover. Rebelling against the increasing pressure of aerodynamic drag, pedestrian protection and weight reduction, courageously not giving a damn about sporty appearance.
Soon I realized that I would have to scramble up all my money to get one of this timeless vehicles.
My Land Rover Discovery, a dream come true
Some weeks later my dealer came up with a fully equipped, pre-owned, half year old Land Rover Discovery 4 SDV6 HSE from 2014. The Land Rover Discovery 4 stands out from its SUV competition with its traditional steel frame, short overhangs, reduction gear and diff locks. During my first test drive, I was simply overwhelmed by the cushioned ride thanks to the soft air suspension and the Windsor leather seats. To make a long story short, I decided to give myself a treat and bought this car.
Tough and built for adventures
Two years later I had experienced a lot of cool adventures with my Landy. It served me very well at travelling long distances on the highways through Europe. On top of that, the breath taking Meridian surround sound system just overwhelmed me every single time. But the Land Rover Discovery did even better off road!
I remember when I had a photo job at the brown coal surface mine in Garzweiler/Germany. Although it was raining, the Land Rover Discovery ploughed through the rust brown mud with stoic confidence. It was passing the huge mining caterpillars as if it was born for this terrain. I can’t describe how much fun I had!
At this point I suggest every Land Rover owner to participate at the Land Rover Experience program. There you will learn step-by-step how to handle your car in off-road conditions.
Furthermore I visited numerous countries in Europe with my Disco, and I even drove to its home country England with it.
The end of a love story
Time flew by and the more miles I drove it, the more I fell in love with British automotive engineering. But this relationship should come to an end on August 11th 2016.
I was preparing two drones for a job at my office the night before departure. After storing my gear in the trunk of my Disco, I drove home to get some hours of sleep. It was 4:30 AM in the morning, when I left the Disco in front of my house here in Vienna. A few hours later, only some shards of glass on the street indicated where I had left the car.
The police officer told me that this was the 8th stolen Land Rover in Vienna that night. It’s sort of a commissional work of professionals. They are getting as many cars as possible throughout the city in a very short time frame. “Don´t get your hopes up, the car is gone, we won’t find it anymore.”
Sometimes you’re up, and sometimes you’re down
This incident beat anything. It was a devastating experience for me in a time where anything went wrong in my life. As soon as you work hard to build something up for yourself, somebody else will try to slow you down, destroy or take what you have earned.
I don’t know if I will ever be able to afford a new Land Rover Discovery in the future, but even if I could, I am not sure if I would dare to buy one again. That’s because this kind of cars are very popular with the asocial crooks in this world…
Currently I am quite happy with my Ural Ranger, because its simplicity helps me to focus on the more important things. But I must admit that from time to time, in calm moments, I am dreaming of a Land Rover Discovery…
